  Comparisons of all-cause mortality between European countries and regions: 2020 Comparison between spring and autumn in Europe By 26 June 2020, the UK had the highest cumulative excess mortality rate in Europe; the cumulative excess mortality rate for the UK was 7.2% above the five-year average by 18 December 2020. During the autumn and early winter months central and eastern European countries had the highest levels of excess mortality in Europe; western European countries still experienced some excess mortality but at lower levels than those experienced in the spring.
