Global excess deaths 2021

The Economist: "Our daily estimate of excess deaths around the world" The pandemic’s true death toll    " H ow many   people have died because of the covid-19 pandemic? The answer depends both on the data available, and on how you define “because”. Many people who die while infected with SARS-CoV-2 are never tested for it, and do not enter the official totals. Conversely, some people whose deaths have been attributed to covid-19 had other ailments that might have ended their lives on a similar timeframe anyway. And what about people who died of preventable causes during the panHdemic, because hospitals full of covid-19 patients could not treat them? If such cases count, they must be offset by deaths that did not occur but would have in normal times, such as those caused by   flu   or   air pollution . Rather than trying to distinguish between types of deaths,  The Economist ’s approach is to count all of them. The standard method of tracking cha...

Excess deaths associated with covid-19 pandemic in 2020

BMJ "Excess deaths associated with covid-19 pandemic in 2020: age and sex disaggregated time series analysis in 29 high income countries"
Comparisons of all-cause mortality between European countries and regions: 2020 Comparison between spring and autumn in Europe By 26 June 2020, the UK had the highest cumulative excess mortality rate in Europe; the cumulative excess mortality rate for the UK was 7.2% above the five-year average by 18 December 2020. During the autumn and early winter months central and eastern European countries had the highest levels of excess mortality in Europe; western European countries still experienced some excess mortality but at lower levels than those experienced in the spring. Of all countries analysed, Poland had the greatest cumulative excess mortality (relative cumulative age-standardised mortality rates, (rcASMRs)) by 18 December 2020, at 11.6% above the five-year average.  The highest peak in weekly excess mortality (relative age-standardised mortality rates (rASMRs)) in the autumn was in Bulgaria, at 112.3% (week ending 27 November), but this was the second-highest peak in th...

"The growth in deaths in Italy in time of Covid-19. An analysis of 1084 Municipalities" "Zwiększenie liczby zgonów we Włoszech w czasie trwania epidemii Covid-19. Analiza 1084 gmin" " […] The analysis conducted showed that an increase in the number of deaths occurred in the period considered, which can only be attributed to the intervention of an external cause, specifically Covid-19. The growth is very consistent and appears to be higher than what is detectable by the data disclosed so far by the Civil Protection. In fact, at 21st March 2020 in Italy there were 4,825 deceased positive patients at Covid-19, but the difference, detected by our analysis, between deaths in 2020 and the average deaths in the period 2015-2019, for the period from 21st February to March 21st, it was already 8,740. And this value refers to a sample that includes only one thousand of the over 8 thousand Italian municipalities, equivalent to 12.3 million inhabitants out of a t...
